Last day at the farm // El ultimo dia en la granja

Yet another reason why I was upset about the hair cut ordeal was because that day was the last nice day before a humongous snowstorm. I had planned on taking the kids to Thanksgiving Point and taking some nice shots. I called my friend B. to join us, and though the idea of fancy pictures was somewhat scratched, we still made it to the farm on that very last day of Fall weather. //

Otra razon por la cual me molesto mucho lo que paso con el cabello de S. es por que ese dia iba a ser uno de los ultimos dias bonitos antes de una super tormenta de nieve. Tenia planeado llevar a los ninos a Thanksgiving Point, en donde queria tomarles unas fotos bonitas. Le llame a mi amiga B. y aunque la idea de fotos formales fue deshechada, de todas maneras fuimos a la granja en ese ultimo dia de Otono. 

I don't know what it is about tiny spaces that delights children. Here E. is in the town's "jail."  //

No se porque a los ninos les encantan los espacios pequenos. Aqui E. esta en la carcel del pueblito. 

Not through the door. There is a rule about finding ways to enter and exit places through any other opening besides the door. //

No por la puerta. Hay una regla en la infancia de siempre encontrar como entrar y salir de cualquier lugar por donde sea menos la puerta. 

E. with our very dear friend B. on a horse-pulled wagon. Can you believe this weather was in the middle of November?  //

E. esta aqui con nuestra querida amiga B. en el vagon. Puedes creer que este clima ocurrio a mediados de Noviembre?

Knowing how wiggly this kid is, he was best seated in the middle. //

Este nino fue mejor sentado en medio, donde no se podia salir.

Me encanta esta foto de sus cachetitos llenitos. Me los quiero comer!

E. got a pony ride too! He chose one of the bigger horses, but they had some ponies and donkeys too. //

E. escogio subirse a uno de los caballos mas grandecitos, pero tenian ponies y burros tambien. 

While E. was on the pony, S. found the delicious world of suckers. I had given him one to entertain him, never really thinking he'd figure out how to unwrap it. Alas! My children just blow me away. He got that sucker faster than I imagined, and he thoroughly enjoyed his reward. //

Mientras E. estaba en su pony, S. encontro el mundo maravilloso de las paletas. Le habia dado yo una paleta para entretenerlo, pero no crei que la fuera a abrir. Oh como me equivoque! En un dos por tres tenia la paleta desenvuelta y en la boca, y le encanto su premio. 

S. was so excited about his first sucker.  // 

S. estaba feliz con su primera paleta. 

He was such a happy baby the rest of the way. //

Iba super contento el resto del camino. 

We saw a really funny goat which kept spying on his neighbors. Seeing him stand, I could just picture a Satyr. //

Vimos un chivo muy chistoso que se la pasaba espiando a sus vecinos. Al verlo pararse asi, me imagine a un Satyr. 

Turkeys! One sometimes forgets that they look like this rather than on a dish at a Thanksgiving feast. //

Guajolotes! A veces uno se olvida de como se ven en vivo, en lugar de un plato el Dia de Accion de Gracias. 

The last day at the farm was so fun. I wanted to enjoy the sunshine and the air and the kids and good company. I got everything I wished for. It was such a great day. //

El ultimo dia en la granja fue muy divertido. Queria disfrutar de los ultimos rayos del sol, de la brisa del aire, de los ninos, y de buena compania. Tuve todo lo que pedi. Fue un dia maravilloso. 

The haircut // El corte de cabello

Last Wednesday morning I went to get baby from his crib just to find him looking...odd. I soon realized that he had gotten a very undesired hair cut the previous day. My thoughts raced, thinking that maybe E. had gotten to him, but E. knows not to cut anybody's hair after he cut the hair on Bruno's tail. Besides, the hair cut was a little too "even" to be the work of a 3-year-old boy. At breakfast I asked E. and he said it was "grandma." Inner fury ensued of course, for S.'s hair had been quite cute and I had been thinking of taking fall pictures my first day off work. Though I trusted E.'s answer, I pryed on B. with the innocent, "Do you know who cut S. hair?" After a moment of silence, B. said that he did, and I knew he was lying! I told him I knew it had been his mom, to which he quickly confessed the lie and told me she felt awful. Well, the damage had been done, and now my kid looks like Lloyd Christmas....again. //

El miercoles pasado cuando fui por el bebe a su cuna lo encontre un poco....raro. Descubri que alguien le habia dado un muy mal corte de cabello el dia anterior. Al principio pense que a lo mejor E. se lo habia cortado, pero el corte estaba muy derechito para haber sido el arte de un nino de 3 años. Durante el desayuno le pregunte a E. y me dijo que habia sido su abuelita. Furia me surgio por las venas por que el cabello de S. se veia muy lindo, y de hecho habia pensado tomarles unas fotos en mi primer dia libre. Aun cuando le crei a E. de todas maneras le pregunte a B., quien, despues de un silencio delatador me dijo que habia sido el. Le dije que ya sabia que habia sido su mama, y B. confeso que queria tomar la culpa por ella por que ella se sentia muy mal. El dano ya hecho, que mas hay que hacer. Ahora mi nino se ve como Lloyd Christmas...otra vez.



Surprise!! Now he just needs a half-chipped tooth and a ruffled orange tuxedo...//

Sorpresa! Ahora nada mas necesita un diente astillado y un traje de color naranja con olanes.

What bothers me the most is that now, when I find the kids in a moment like this,

Lo que mas me molesta es que ahora, cuando encuentre a los ninos en un momento como este,

I snap the shot and it ends up looking like this. I ought to look at the bright side and realize that years down the road whenever we look at these pictures, we will laugh hysterically at S.'s awesome bowl cut and their lack of pants, right?

les tomo la foto y sale asi. Deberia de ver la situacion por el lado amable y pensar que en unos años cuando veamos estas fotos, nos vamos a a reir del corte de tazon y la falta de pantalones, verdad?

Needless to say, the poor kiddo was rushed to Cookie Cutters where he chose the fire engine and did not cry this time! //

No falta decir que llevamos al nino al salon, en donde escogio sentarse en el camion de bomberos, y esta vez, no lloro!

The stylist was able to fix him up ok, but I miss his baby long hair :(.

La estilista hizo lo que pudo, pero de todas maneras extrano su cabello largo :(.

Any day at the park // Cualquier día en el parque

One of the major reasons we moved to this house was its proximity to the parks. In any given stroll we can deviate about 5 steps and end up at the park. The weather has been crazy warm this Fall, but the forecast seems to always forewarn a looming snowstorm. In the spirit of Carpe Diem, we go out of our way to enjoy the last days of light jackets and bare feet. //

Una de las razones principales por las cuales nos mudamos a ésta casa fué por su proximidad a los parques. En cualquier paseo, nos podemos desviar 5 pasos y terminar en el parque. El clima ha sido muy cálido este Otoño, pero el pronóstico del tiempo siempre advierte que una tormenta de nieve está por llegar. En el espíritu de Carpe Diem, salimos a disfrutar de los últimos días de chaquetas lijeras y pies descalzos.



 

S., unlike E., likes to stay grounded. He is not one for heights or thrills of speed; his thrill comes in the form of H2O, but more of that to come in another post. //

Diferente a E., a S. le gusta quedarse conectado a la tierra. El no ama las alturas ni las sensaciones de velocidad, su pasión tiene la forma de H2O, pero "esa es...otra historia."  



He does like holding onto metal bars for dear life. He is a little monkey! S. had been hanging from the stroller handle, so I figured maybe a day at the park was needed. //

Aunque si le gusta agarrarse de las barras de metal como un pequeño changuito! S. se había estado colgando de la manija de la carriola, así que ya hacia falta un día en el parque.

I love this little face! E. gets so excited to go down the slides. E. runs around from thing to thing,

Me encanta esta carita! E. se emociona tanto al bajar las resbaladillas y corre de una cosa a otra,



while S. is pretty much stuck in place, making funny faces. That kid! I think he practices changing his gesture all-the-time.

mientras S. se queda en un solo lugar, haciendo caras. Ese niño! Creo que practica hacer gestos todo-el-día. 

E. just grins and smiles. He's gotten to the age when he can do "cheesy" smiles for pictures. //

E. solamente ríe y sonríe. Ya llegó a la edad en la cual el puede hacer sonrisas cursis para las fotos. 

And then smile for real.  //

Y luego sonreir de verdad. 

Even Bruno enjoys a good rump on the sand. He is still my spunky puppy, right? //

Incluso a Bruno le gusta correr sobre la arena. Sigue siendo mi cachorrito, verdad?

Nope...he's done. Bruno has a subtle way of telling us when he is ready to head home. //

No...él ya se cansó. Bruno tiene una manera sútil de decirnos que ya esta listo para irse a casa. 

Doctors and ER visits

As I had previously mentioned, the last couple of months have been rough as far as our health is concerned. S. had croup. E. had pneumonia. B. had a stomach bug and lost his voice. I broke my foot, went through a nasty cold, and just recently caught whatever stomach bug has been going around. //

Como ya había mencionado, los últimos dos meses han sido un tanto difíciles con respecto a nuestra salud. S. tuvo crup. E. tuvo pneumonía. B. tuvo un virus estomacal, y a parte perdió la voz. Yo me fracturé el pie, pase por una gripe horrible, y recientemente agarré el virus estomacal que todo el mundo parece tener.

Last week on, I came home to find little kid like this: //

La semana pasada de trabajo, llegué a casa para encontrar al niño así:

E. did not look good at all. He was retracting, and B. told me had a fever. He was irritable and had lots of pain. He scared me because he would get these panic moments, when, I assume, he found himself gasping for air, and freaked him out. Having had the recent diagnosis of pneumonia, I called the on-call doc, and she recommended that we take him to the ER. So we ended here: //

E. no se veía muy bien. Su pecho se sumía, y B. me dijo que había tenido fiebre. E. estaba de mal húmor y tenía mucho dolor. Me espantó por que le daban unos ataques de pánico, en los cuales me imagino, se encontraba a falta de aire y lo asustaban. Dado el diagnóstico de pneumonía reciente, le llamé al doctor y me recomendó que lo llevara a Emergencias. Así que terminamos aquí:



I had given him an albuterol treatment at home before calling the doc, so by the time we arrived to the ER, E. was in pretty decent spirits. //

Le acaba de dar un tratamiento de albuterol en casa cuando le llamé al doctor, así que para cuando llegamos a Emergencias, el niño no se veía tan mal. 

He was fascinated by the oxygen saturation meter. He got so shy at all the attention, and thought it was grand when he was wheeled on his bed to get a chest X-ray. After which, he got three stickers. He said, "one for mommy, one for E., and one for S." Too bad the one for his little brother didn't make it. It got stuck to the bedside table. I convinced him to put his on his chest instead of on the gown. That is where I put the stickers he gives me before going to work. That way they stay on all day long.

Le fascinó el medidor de saturación de oxígeno. Se puso todo tímido con toda la atención que le dieron, y le encantó cuando se lo llevaron en la cama a tomarse los rayos X. Después le dieron 3 estampas. Me dijo, "una para mamá, otra para E. y otra para S." Que malo fue que la estampa para su hermanito no llegó a casa. Se quedó pegada en la mesita de al lado. Lo convencí de ponerse la suya en el pecho en vez de en la bata. Es ahí en donde yo me pongo las que E. me da antes de irme al trabajo. De esa manera se quedan puestas todo el día.

We were in the E.R. for a while. They were about to discharge him when they noticed he was retracting again and had to give him further treatment. We got home by 2 am, and we were both exhausted. But I was glad that we had the ability to care for him in the way he needed. We followed up with his doc come Monday morning, but he is doing much, much better. E. is going to be monitored for the next year or so to make sure his respiratory distress is not asthma. //

Estuvimos en Emergencias un buen rato. Estaban a punto de dejarnos ir cuando notaron que no estaba respirando bien y lo tuvieron que tratar otra vez. Llegamos a casa como a las 2 am, y los dos estábamos exhaustos. Pero yo me sentí en paz al saber que tuvimos la abilidad de darle el cuidado que necesitaba. Le dimos seguimiento con su doctor el Lunes por la mañana, y ya se ve mucho mejor. Van a mantenerlo en observación durante el próximo año para asegurarse que su aflicción respiratoria no es asma.

S.

So starting with the E.R. visit the night of his birthday, S. has been constantly congested and sick. The poor kid! Finally (the same day I had to take E. for his E.R. follow-up!) he had been well enough that he could catch up with his immunizations. Overall, S. is doing great. He is of a healthy weight and height, and now we just have to get him through winter without getting sick...//

Empezando con la visita a Emergencias la noche de su cumpleaños, S. también se la ha pasado enfermito. Pobrecito! Finalmente, el mismo día que tuve que llevar a E. a seguimiento, S. se encontraba lo suficientemente bien para su chequeo y sus vacunas. Dentro de todo, S. esta muy bien. Tiene buen peso y altura, y ahora nada más tenemos que sobrevivir el invierno sin que se vuelva a enfermar...

S. did not think the band-aids were any help, so he took them right off! //

S. no pensó que los curitas le ayudaron, así que se los quitó luego luego.



I prepared E. by telling him that S. was getting some shots and that he was going to cry, but I still did not want him to watch. So I told him to draw me a picture while S. got his shots. E. was quite okay with that.  //

Preparé a E. y le dije que S. iba a recibir sus vacunas e iba a llorar, pero aún así no quise que lo viera. Entonces le dije que me dibujara algo. A E. le gustó la idea.

Needless to say, it has been a trying couple of months. The kids have been great, but it is never fun to end in the E.R. at midnight. //

No falta decir que han sido un par de meses difíciles. Los niños han lidiado súper bien, pero nunca es divertido terminar en Emergencias a media noche.

The search for the perfect pumpkin chocolate chip muffin

To me, Fall screams pumpkin, and one of the best ways to enjoy pumpkin is in pumpkin chocolate chip bread (read muffins, loaves, or whatever). It is rich, it is spicy, it is just deliciousness in every bite. So when E. needed to take a treat for his music class, I chose to make pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. E. loves them. He can eat three in one sitting!



I had been looking for the perfect recipe. I love the artisan bakeries' pumpkin loaves. They are dense and full of flavor. So far I haven't gotten anything close to that, but I'll keep searching and tweaking. For now, this is what I have:



Ingredients:

2 cups white flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

2 cups white sugar

1 cup brown sugar 

1 tsp salt

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp ground cloves

2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp allspice 

3 tbsp maple syrup or honey

4 eggs

1 cup oil

3 tbsp water

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups pumpkin puree

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips //

Para mi, la calabaza indica el Otoño, y una de las mejores maneras de disfrutar las calabazas es en forma de pan con chispas de chocolate (ya sea en panquecitos, hogaza, etc.). El sabor es rico y condimentado; es exquisitez en cada mordida. Asi que cuando necesitaba llevar algo a la clase de música de E., hize panquecitos de calabaza con chispas de chocolate. A E. le encantan. El puede comerse tres en una sentada!

He estado buscando la receta perfecta. Me encantan los panes artesanales. Son mas densos y llenos de sabor. Hasta el momento no he encontrado nada que se le parezca, pero seguiré buscando y alterando. Por ahora, aqui esta lo que tengo:

2 tazas de harina blanca

1 taza de harina integral

2 tazas de azúcar blanca

2 tazas de azúcar morena

1 cucharadita de sal

2 cucharaditas de bicarbonato de sodio

1 cucharadita de nuez moscada molida

1/2 cucharadita de clavos de olor molidos

2 cucharaditas de canela

1/2 cucharadita de allspice (?)

3 cucharadas de miel o miel de maple

4 huevos

1 taza de aceite

3 cucharadas de agua

1 cucharadita de vainilla

2 tazas de pure de calabaza

1 taza de chispas semi-dulces de chocolate

y un bebe gateando listo para agarrar cualquier chispa de chocolate que se caiga!

Directions: // Instrucciones

Mix all the dry ingredients and wet ingredients in separate bowls.

Mezcla todos los ingredientes secos y los húmedos en tazones separados.

Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients. The batter is thick.

Añade la mezcla de ingredientes húmedos a la mezcla de los secos. La mezcla va a estar espesa.

Fold in the chocolate chips. //

Añade las chispas de chocolate.

Spray PAM or grease muffin tray (or cake pan...)

Prepara los moldes con PAM (aceite en spray).

Bake at 350 F until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Muffins about 25-28 min. Mini bread loaves around 35-38 min. Regular size loaves around 60 min. Allow to cool. Pumpkin bread gets better once cool, and even better the next day, so plan ahead. This recipe makes about 20 regular size muffins, or 2 regular size loaves. Keep in mind that I am baking at high altitude, so watch your baking times. They might be quite different from mine.//

Hornea a 350 F (177 Celsius) hasta que un palillo insertado salga limpio. Los panquecitos toman 25-28 minutos. Las hogazas pequeñas entre 35-38 minutos. Las hogazas regulares como 1 hora. Déjalos enfriar. El pan de calabaza sabe mejor a temperatura ambiental, y adquiere sabor para el siguiente día. Esta receta saca 20 panquecitos regulares o 2 hogazas regulares. Recuerda que yo horneo en altitud alta, así que pon atención al tiempo de hornear. Los tiempos pueden variar mucho a los mios.

I looked at a lot of recipes and concocted this one. Pumpkin bread is really easy and very forgiving. You can get away with only using cinnamon and forgoing all the other spices, as well as just using sugar instead of brown sugar and honey/maple syrup. Some recipes even scratched off the eggs. Pepitas and/or walnuts can substitute the chocolate chips.  I am still looking for a more dense, flavorful bread, but you may like it light and fluffy.This is the latest out of 3 other attempts I've made in the last month. I liked how these turned out, but I am still not 100% satisfied. My husband and the kids loved them, as have other people that have sampled them. Beware more pumpkin bread to bake! //

Ví muchas recetas antes de llegar a ésta. El pan de calabaza es muy fácil de hacer y perdona mucho. Se puede usar solamente canela y olvidar las otras especies, al igual que se puede usar solamente azúcar blanca en vez de la morena y de la miel. Algunas recetas tambien dejaron fuera los huevos. Nueces y pepitas pueden substituir las chispas de chocolate. Yo estoy buscando una receta que dé un pan denso, lleno de sabor.  Pero igual y a ti te puede gustar algo mas ligero. Este fué el último de 3 intentos en el mes pasado. Me gustó como salieron, pero no estoy el 100% satisfecha. A mi esposo y a los niños les encantaron, y tambien a otras personas que los probaron. Aun así, hay mas pan de calabaza en el horizonte!
